Karma’s Kompanions

Oneida, NY – The Madison County Veterans  Agency (MCVSA) is proud to announce the creation of a dedicated fund for veterans through a collaboration with Wanderers Rest  Humane Association. The program will address a significant barrier for our veterans: adoption fees. While these fees are essential for the continued success of  Wanderers Rest, we recognize the challenge the fees pose for veterans seeking the companionship of a furry friend.

“Animal companions can have a profound  impact on veterans’ lives,” said Ron Raymer,  Director of Madison County Veterans Service  Agency. “We know that first hand. Last year,  we lost a dear friend and colleague to suicide.  His dog, Karma, came every day with him to  work in our office. Karma not only provided  companionship for our dear friend, Mark. She  also made a huge impact on the rest of us in  the office, and the veterans that came  through our doors.”

“Studies have shown that companion animals can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and  loneliness, all common challenges faced by veterans. Owning a pet can also encourage social  interaction and provide a sense of purpose and routine, leading to overall improved well-being.  This program is just one way we can eliminate the financial obstacle for veterans to help them  make a life changing connection.”

Last week, the Sons of the American Legion (S.A.L.) presented a check for $2,670 to MCVSA and  Wanderers Rest for the program. The funds came from the Armed Forces Day  Golf Outing Raffle held last month. Presenting the check was Tim Fidler, Madison County  Commander of the Sons of the American Legion and Vice President of the Sons of the  Durhamville Veterans Club. “As a son of a veteran, it is our goal to support the veterans in any  way we can. That is why we decided to support Karmas Kompanions program with our fundraiser  this year.”

“This is a great start to helping connect our veterans with an animal companion,” said Sarah  Murdie, Executive Director of Wanderers Rest Humane Association. “This program is not only  for our veterans, but also benefits our animals. A way to eliminate the financial barrier for  eligible veterans, and facilitate that much needed emotional bond for both the veteran and the  rescued animal.”

Adoption fees play a critical role in supporting Wanderers Rests’ mission. They help provide  essential medical care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and behavioral training for the animals  in their care. Additionally, adoption fees contribute to the ongoing costs of sheltering rescued  animals, ensuring they receive proper food, shelter, and enrichment until they find their forever  home.

“By supporting this fund, we’re not just helping veterans – we’re helping Wanderers Rest  continue their exceptional work of caring for animals in need,” said Raymer. “This creates a  win-win situation for veterans, the animals in the shelter, and our entire community.”

Thank you to Old Erie Golf Course, Oneida American Legion Memorial Board, Oneida American  Legion Post #169, Oneida American Legion Auxiliary, Oneida American Legion S.A.L.,  Durhamville Vets Club Auxiliary, and the Sons of the Durhamville Vets Club for the donation.

MCVSA and Wanderers Rest also have collaborated to bring adoptable animals to the Veterans  Community Center in Oneida on Fridays and Mondays every week. Veterans and their families  are welcome to come meet adoptable dogs every “Fur Friday” or an adoptable cat on “Meow  Monday”.
